WELCOME,
WELCOME! COME ONE, COME ALL, TO THE OFFICIAL MCWATTERS MOVIE BLOG!
This has
been a long time coming and we are very excited to finally get this going. This
didn’t just come out of the blue either. We have been asked by many of our
friends, “why don’t you two blog about the crazy/awful/laughably bad movies you
watch on a daily basis?” Now when we get asked this, we can excitedly reply “we
do, we do!!”
Just in case
you aren’t familiar with us, let me give you a little background about us. Tom
and I are a happy little family of 2 who just moved into our first house. Over
the past 7 years that we have been together, we have not had cable; (Neither of
us had cable before we lived together either, but let’s just focus on the time
after we met, because nothing really matters before that anyway.) and since
regular TV has gone digital, we haven’t even had our local channels. I know
this seems crazy. The thought of not having any TV channels makes many of my
friends and family members want to go running for the hills, but Tom and I have
gotten by just fine with our movie/TV show on DVD collection. Since we moved
into our new home (we have been there for about 3 weeks now) we did add cable
to our internet bill, but honestly we have only watched it twice since we’ve
gotten it. Our cable box even broke a week after we got it. Tom had it switched
out for a new one, but we still aren’t watching it. We should really just
cancel the cable. It is just not meant to be for us.
Due to our
non-TV watching lifestyle, we have accumulated an impressive (or I think it is
impressive anyway) collection of movies and TV shows on both DVD and VHS. Yes,
you read that right, we still watch VHS tapes. We need something to pass the
time. This collection is so large that we have often thought of making rental
cards for our friends who are always borrowing our movies. We are constantly
hearing “we knew you would have that movie.”
We love that
we have such a vast collection of media, but the quantity does cause 1 big
problem. How do you organize a collection this size and still be able to find
the exact movie you want to watch? We have tried different options over the
years and have finally found a system that seems to be working so far. We tried
to categorize by genre but found that the traditional genre categories really
didn’t fit how we would categorize the movie. For example, one of our favorite
movies of all time is the Stallone classic “Cobra” and traditionally it would
be kept in the Action/Adventure section of your video rental store of old (isn’t
it sad that they are obsolete?). Now “Cobra” is in fact an action movie
complete with shoot outs and 1 really bad ass cop who doesn’t play by the rules,
but we laugh our asses off every time we watch it and even quote it for comic relief
in our daily lives. I think this makes it a comedy. The other possible genre
that we could put this classic into would be a “Stallone” genre. Tom and I both
agree that the movies of Sylvester Stallone deserve a genre all of their own.
Now do you
see our dilemma? There is no way that we could possibly categorize our
collection by genre. We also tried to organize alphabetically, which worked
really well at first, and the movies that we hardly watched stayed in an easy
to find order, but the most watched were always all over the place, and we are
constantly adding more to our collection. It was just too much to keep up with
because we don’t have an employee who waits around for us to finish a movie or buy
some new ones and files them away, re-alphabetizes them, etc. So when we moved
into the house 3 weeks ago, Tom got a brilliant idea and reorganized our entire
collection according watching frequency. He put 3 free standing DVD stands near
the TV, 1 for TV shows and the other 2 for movies. These stands currently hold
our most frequently watched/favorites that we can’t go on without. He then
filled 2 cubby like shelving units with the rest of our DVD collection. He has
big plans to have book shelves in one of the spare bedrooms full of our VHS
tapes, but that is a project that we have yet to tackle.
So know that
you know a little about us, let’s get down to business. The purpose of this
blog is a way of us to chronicle our movie watching. We want to give us our reviews,
thoughts, comments, favorite moments and quotes. We watch a lot of movies from
both our collection and from NetFilx that range all over genre wise, so there
will be a big variety. We want to come up with some sort of ranking system that
is more in depth, but until then we will use a basic 1-10 system. I really hope
that you enjoy our commentary and find these movies as entertaining as we do.
P.S. Last night’s
movies were Gamera with MST3K and Best in Show both on NetFlix watch instantly. Both were laugh out loud
funny and my favorite line from Gamera was “fueled by hatred and water, the first slushy is
born.”
